Message	1. The knock: Cut about a 3 foot length of garden hose. Start the car. Have someone rev the engine to produce the "knock". Put the hose against the oil pan, and see if you can localize the sound. If it is a rod knock, it should be obvious to hear at the pan. 2. Possible compression issue. Do a compression test to indicate valve or ring issues (smoking may indicate this). Unfortunately, if you have a knock, bad valves, or worn/damaged rings, the engine needs to come out and be rebuilt. 3.Seems like you might also have fuel or sparks issues as well.
